On Saturday, May 26, our team at Active took to the fields to participate, and celebrate in the motionball Marathon of Sport. The weather was perfect, and the day was filled with various sports, friendly competition, and endless smiles. Two teams from Active International Canada entered the event, and each was accompanied by a local Special Olympics athlete who led their teams throughout the fun-filled day.
Active International Team 1 was captained by Andrew Bulmer, President, and Managing Director, and led by Taylor Redmond (“Boss Taylor”) of Guelph, Ontario. Active International Team 2 was captained by Dustin Metcalf, Media Supervisor, and led by Mackenzie De Jonge, of Guelph Ontario.
Collectively, motionball Marathon of Sport raised over $400,000 in support of Special Olympics Athletes across Canada. Our teams at Active are proud to have contributed by raising $15,000 together.
Both Active teams hit the ground running when it came to fundraising and spreading awareness of the motionball Marathon of Sport. The social media outreach was very impressive from all participants and proved to be successful. Both teams made it into the Top 15 leader board in terms of funds raised, with Active International 1 also landing within the Top 10.
Taylor and Mackenzie will both be heading to the Special Olympics National tournament in Nova Scotia this summer to compete against athletes from across the country. The fundraising efforts for the Marathon of sport will help athletes like Taylor, and Mackenzie live out their dreams of competing in events nationwide.
All teams participating in the Marathon of Sport played a total of 13 rounds of the following games: Soccer, Beach Volleyball, Football, Corn Hole, Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball and Bench Ball. Teams enjoyed many other fun activities and surprises, such as candy buffets, DJ booths, inflatable obstacle courses and of course a delicious Pita Pit lunch mid day to refuel.
Fantastic event that had the team smiling and laughing all day! Can’t wait to participate again next year – Dustin Metcalf, Media Supervisor
It was a great and fulfilling experience; so lucky to have had an opportunity to play together as a team and compete alongside Special Olympics athletes – Luba Klochkova, Human Resources Manager
