My mom and dad instilled in me the importance of giving time to charity. My mom has always volunteered for major events, fundraising initiatives and founding a local gymnastics club in my hometown of Collingwood, as well as running the Canadian National Rhythmic Gymnastics team and was honored as citizen of the year a few years ago as a result of her dedication. My father also volunteered his time to local service clubs, minor hockey and also many anonymous acts of kindness for folks less fortunate in our community.

This weekend in Toronto I’ll be pulling out my golf clubs earlier than ever to head to the driving range to get my swing in shape for an extended golf season thanks to the “winter that never was”. A recent article by Marina Strauss of the Globe and Mail outlined the effect that the weather has had on retailers forced to discount winter seasonal merchandise and scramble to get their hands on spring and summer merchandise inventories.

When I joined Active in October of 2011, my mom and my friends asked me “so what does Active International do?”. I performed my best elevator speech honed from my years of sales experience to explain that “we are a global trade company that lets companies use their assets to pay for media, marketing and operating services.” I noticed that I had several blank stares in return and decided that we needed to launch a website specifically for our Canadian marketplace to make our value proposition and our business more tangible.
