Find me on:

Friday, November 23rd was one of the most anticipated nights in the Media industry. It was the night of Movember Mayhem, a charity boxing competition presented by Agency Wars and the Toronto Real Estate Rumble. This Las Vegas-style gala supported the Movember Foundation, which helps raise awareness and funds for various areas of Men’s Health, including but not limited to male cancers, mental health, and suicide prevention. On fight night, over 40 men and women from the Advertising, Media, Marketing and Real Estate industries came together to compete in over 20 boxing matches in support of the cause.

In the blue corner, representing Active International, was Dustin “The Wind” Metcalf, Media Supervisor.  Dustin recalled, I chose to participate in Agency Wars as I am always up for any unique challenge that comes my way! Once I first caught wind of this fantastic opportunity, I knew I had to be a part of it. Unfortunately, the timing was never right to commit myself to the 12-week structure… that is, until this year when Agency Wars VIII came along!”

A Grueling Journey

Throughout his twelve-week journey, Dustin learned the basics of boxing, followed a strict meal plan, and took part in arduous training that not only refined his skills, but also helped sharpen his mental agility and concentration, all while building perseverance and resilience. It was an unbelievable experience that tested me both mentally and physically; I highly recommend all those up to the task to partake in future years. My amateur boxing debut will forever be ingrained as a top accomplishment in my life and I hope to continue the training going forward!”

The Big Fight

In support of Dustin and the charitable cause, Active Canada sponsored the event and purchased a ringside table for a front row view of the action. A group of Active staff members showed up to the fight, including Anne-Amor Nepomuceno, Operations Manager, who recalled her memories of the event. “With his face showing fierce intensity, Dustin stood in front of the curtains waiting to be announced into the ring.  Behind him stood a loud and rowdy group of his people holding up signs, waving their hands in the air and jumping in sync with him.  It was at that moment that I felt proud to be part of this boisterous posse, backing this guy who made sacrifices and pushed himself harder than he ever had to achieve his goal. Congratulations Dustin on an exciting 3 rounds – you are a winner in my books!”

Ben Lawrence, Junior Key Account Buyer, was also at the event supporting his colleague. Ben competed in Agency Wars in 2012 so he knows first-hand the hard work that Dustin put in. "The dedication it takes to go through this process is unreal,” Ben explained. “For 3 months, the diet and training regimen are very intense, but it's all worth it on fight night when you compete in the most physical chess match you've ever been in.  I admire Dustin's dedication throughout this entire journey, and I'm so proud of how well he did in his big match.  I hope it was as fulfilling for him as it was for me."
